Differences between interpretation and translation

In short, interpretation is spoken and translation is written.

  • Interpretation is when you take one language and convert it into another language via the verbal form.
  • Translation is when you convert one language to another via the written form.

Generally both interpretation and translation are used interchangeably yet they are different crafts and markets.

We have interpreted

  • Community meetings
  • UN side panels
  • Farm field visits
  • Multi day conferences
  • Asylum interviews

We have translated

  • Outreach materials
  • Restaurant menus
  • Book chapters
  • Poetry
  • Social media content

Types of interpretation

Simultaneous

Simultaneous

Simultaneous

This is when the interpreter converts message into another language on par when original audio is being shared. This can happen thanks to physical equipment such as receivers and mics and add ons available for online meetings and happens parallel to event.

Can be remote or in person.

Consecutive

Simultaneous

Simultaneous

The interpreter converts message into other language directly following the original audio. An example would be the speaker sharing their message in pieces, a few sentences, to allow the interpreter to share in the other language.

Can be remote or in person.
